JIM
I am your guest co-host Jim Mathews reporting from the Chicago office. Joining me today, Andy Foreman. Andy, how are you today?
00;00;44;07 – 00;00;47;14
ANDY
I’m doing spectacular, Jim, how are you?
00;00;47;16 – 00;01;00;13
JIM
I’m doing very well. I have very big shoes to fill from Cody’s absence. I’m trying to step in for Cody. It’s an impossible task to live up to his performance on a week to week basis.
00;01;00;15 – 00;01;04;11
ANDY
The question for you. How come you didn’t shave your head for this?
00;01;04;14 – 00;01;16;06
JIM
I thought about it. I thought about shaving it, keeping the clippings on my face to replace Cody. But again. Yeah, but I just can’t. I just can’t swing it.
00;01;16;09 – 00;01;25;05
ANDY
You just can’t swing it. You need, like, a black polo with a black T-shirt underneath and, like, a headband or something like that. I know. A little longer cycle.
00;01;25;08 – 00;01;26;06
JIM
Definitely a motorcycle.
00;01;26;12 – 00;01;29;29
ANDY
Definitely a motorcycle. Not a grill, though. You can’t have a girl.
00;01;30;02 – 00;01;31;01
JIM
No, no. Heavens, no.
00;01;31;06 – 00;01;37;16
ANDY
We haven’t done tech talk in a while, so thanks for rejuvenating the tech Totnes.
00;01;37;18 – 00;01;45;25
JIM
Thanks for having me. It’s amazing to be here and to try and sub in the grain feed intro with tech talk.
00;01;45;27 – 00;02;02;14
ANDY
You did a phenomenal job. All right. Let out Iowa. The whole world is just. Is just. They’re dying to know your technical analysis. Opinion of corn. This is these corn. This is your wheelhouse right here. Jimbo, Jimbo, land Jimbo’s wheelhouse.
00;02;02;16 – 00;02;24;14
JIM
It really is. And we’re trying to leave the fundamental analysis out of this because it’s tech talk. Let’s dive right in. I mean, four for one for DS corn. $5 has been. Have been that, like, Holy Grail, if you will, for a long time. We’ve been away from it for a solid year and a half. Plus it’s been away from five bucks.
00;02;24;16 – 00;02;51;03
JIM
But we came down back in May, hit it back in July, hit it August. We’ve been managing to stay under it kind of in this range of, let’s say 475 for 80 ish up to five bucks. That’s very difficult range to break out of lately. You’ve you’ve got it circled there back in July before that heat wave came through, all getting bunched up into that area.
00;02;51;03 – 00;02;54;15
JIM
And it feels like we’re kind of back into that congestion again now.
00;02;54;17 – 00;03;16;04
ANDY
Question for you, Do you think so? In the past we’ve seen where you have kind of like a like an almost as if I call this an ascending wedge just yet, but like somewhat like you have a slight move in the opposite direction of what was like the preceding larger moves. Obviously, we broke from 564 down to 480 ish, call it.
00;03;16;07 – 00;03;33;16
ANDY
You’ll get like a very small ascending wedge that’s usually like a like in this case it would be a prelude to further weakness. I guess. In your opinion, what would what would make you sell this? Like technically, what would make you sell this contract?
00;03;33;18 – 00;04;05;11
JIM
I think I would probably wait to step in if we can either get to the upside of that channel and or push through it. There is a there is an outstanding gap still at 525 and a half on this daily December chart. And that that’s that’s the one thing that continues to just kind of hover on the back of my mind is what if we could still breakout, you know, skyrocket to the upside?
00;04;05;13 – 00;04;14;03
JIM
And that’s the lingering target up there for me as a in theory gaps are meant to be closed.
00;04;14;06 – 00;04;19;18
ANDY
Gaps are meant to be closed. You are doing a phenomenal job filling in for Cody.
00;04;19;20 – 00;04;20;00
JIM
Wow.
00;04;20;00 – 00;04;26;24
ANDY
Thank you. The broader the gap, nobody had. Like you’re just like band gap gap chaser. Here we go.
00;04;26;26 – 00;04;28;03
JIM
Mind the gap.
00;04;28;05 – 00;04;45;08
ANDY
Mind the gap. That’s right. Yeah. I guess the only thing that would make me, I guess, take the other side of that is if we got to I just pulled this up here. So the low was 473 and some change call for something more. I think if you got to close at like 472 and then open lower after that, it could get really dicey here.
00;04;45;11 – 00;05;07;18
ANDY
Mm. Like again, you had an attempt to have a slight rally, but I look at this and say like you had this big break that in response to that, like the Bulls can’t really do much of anything with it like this is a noisy it tried to rally a smidge I mean this is 475 this high from that day was little over five bucks out of six but couldn’t maintain it.
00;05;07;22 – 00;05;17;02
ANDY
Another shot at $5 couldn’t hold it. So you have this like very, very small upward like again, like continue almost like a continuation of this break.
00;05;17;05 – 00;05;17;14
JIM
Yeah.
00;05;17;14 – 00;05;22;23
ANDY
So if if if, if here’s the weekly this is what kind of bugs me too.
00;05;22;26 – 00;05;23;16
JIM
Yeah.
00;05;23;18 – 00;05;35;23
ANDY
That’s not looking too rosy. What stuck out to me about this Jumbo was right here, right where we broke out from 430. That feels like the next little target, I think.
00;05;35;23 – 00;06;06;10
JIM
I think if you have been a bull of the last 2 to 3 weeks and you’ve been wondering, have I found the bottom at 475 for eight ish? Because we do continue to try and grind out this area and maybe you wonder, okay, bears aren’t really stepping in and hammering this thing down, so maybe I’ve got a chance at actually catching this bottom and that it’s been a very grinding, rounding out type of move here.
00;06;06;12 – 00;06;30;24
JIM
So if you’re a bull holding out hope, you would think that maybe this is when you try to time out that low, especially on the December contract with that chance of maybe we make one more run back up and puncture five bucks, puncture that gap. But I would have to imagine, like the start of this week when December corn essentially failed five bucks.
00;06;30;24 – 00;06;55;16
JIM
I think it missed it by half a cent that probably had to have been pretty discouraging for bulls that we could not achieve it, let alone break through it and hold it. I think the one day last week when we did actually manage to grab it and lasted a day, if that this is this has had to have been a very discouraging and frustrating run for a corn bulls down here.
00;06;55;22 – 00;07;09;15
JIM
But if you were the flip side of that is if you were uber bearish, you have to be wondering what’s holding us up right. It’s a what’s what’s stopping us from making this run down to 450, let’s say.
00;07;09;18 – 00;07;21;26
ANDY
Well, to me. So while you’re chatting here, I was just looking at this close. So this so last this is a weekly it’s a weekly continuation. Corn So last week was 461 was the low. And so.
00;07;21;28 – 00;07;22;17
JIM
Yesterday.
00;07;22;17 – 00;07;38;18
ANDY
We settled on that low. So, you know, let’s say we’re unsure. Tomorrow you’re going to settle basically on the low here on the weekly basis. And then if you open the next week, lower. So like Sunday night, I think it’s I mean, it’s it’s a quick trip to 437 for 440 type number.
00;07;38;21 – 00;07;39;10
JIM
Yeah.
00;07;39;12 – 00;07;42;27
ANDY
Does this I mean this chart looks very weak.
00;07;42;29 – 00;07;55;24
JIM
Oh yeah. I would I would just add the caveat that the, the lead month on that continuous weekly is September and we are entering September delivery period tomorrow.
00;07;55;26 – 00;07;58;13
ANDY
Okay. Well, you know what that.
00;07;58;13 – 00;07;59;23
JIM
Is out there.
00;07;59;26 – 00;08;09;25
ANDY
That right there is just like a golden nugget of information for our listeners. Like you just dropped a piece of gold on the ground and said, pick, please pick this up.
00;08;09;27 – 00;08;10;20
JIM
Pick this sucker.
00;08;10;20 – 00;08;12;06
ANDY
Up. So thank you for that.
00;08;12;08 – 00;08;13;03
JIM
Absolutely.
00;08;13;06 – 00;08;28;20
ANDY
Yeah. So let’s go back to the Daily real fast. I think you and I are in agreeance. It’s just kind of like, where do you want to? Like if we get a shot at settling over, like, I guess the flip side of it, too, is if you did settle over five bucks, you’re saying that, like, this gap becomes almost like a target, right?
00;08;28;21 – 00;08;34;18
ANDY
Is that one thing that’s kind of lingering? It’s like cold hearing right now. It’s like not fitting a big bearish narrative.
00;08;34;20 – 00;08;57;28
JIM
Exactly. Right. And I think you have the 20 day on there that we’ve really also been struggling to find much activity above. Right. We’ve we’ve maybe closed one session above that 20 day that one day I referenced when we actually did push through five bucks and it didn’t last that resistance. The top side of that wick was the 20 day.
00;08;58;01 – 00;09;08;05
JIM
So unfortunately for bulls that’s become a pretty formidable moving average and we just kind of stay glued to it really now over the last week plus.
00;09;08;08 – 00;09;26;11
ANDY
All right. Well, something to be mindful of either way, I think it’s something to be mindful of. So I think a big takeaway, if we get it, if we get too close back below the one of these lows right here, let’s just take a quick peek at that again. Yeah, this low right here. So what, you’re Jimbo’s wheelhouse is over it.
00;09;26;13 – 00;09;36;19
ANDY
Sorry about that. So for 73, that’s basically kind of like the number right there. And like 473, I would say we get to close below that. It’s probably closer to four and a half.
00;09;36;22 – 00;09;38;18
JIM
You would think so. You would think so.
00;09;38;25 – 00;09;45;10
ANDY
All right. All right. All right. Let’s go to the other side of Jimbo’s wheelhouse. This is no beans.
00;09;45;13 – 00;09;46;02
JIM
Mm. Huh.
00;09;46;04 – 00;09;49;21
ANDY
Well, now, this isn’t looking too pretty here. What do you think, Richard?
00;09;49;23 – 00;10;14;25
JIM
It’s not looking too pretty. But we’ve had that conversation before, right? We had that conversation at the end of July and very, very similar moves of the. It’s like you’ve tried to skyrocket up out of the atmosphere and you’re in space and suddenly you’re just like floating for a hot second and that’s your high. And then you come crashing back down to earth for a bit.
00;10;14;25 – 00;10;57;10
JIM
I think it’s interesting that we did hold essentially right at 13 bucks for November beans. We came down and hit 1280. I saw you had those the retracement on start. I mean, that was almost a perfect test of that retracement level from the Yeah, June this May lows up to the July ish highs almost a perfect test of that Wow you get a nice bounce off and then yet a very similar feel of quite the run to open up this week gap higher on Sunday night Monday morning quickly close it and then suddenly you know that’s not a pretty candle for today’s close.
00;10;57;12 – 00;11;08;19
ANDY
Well it’s not it’s really not. So I mean, as I drew the first three legs, there’s a fourth one. We just this it’s going to be an ebb and like go test 1280 again, 13 bucks.
00;11;08;21 – 00;11;30;26
JIM
I think. I think you could argue you at least try and bust through that mess of moving averages you have there. I mean, that’s just kind of a sloppy little grouping of some of those moving averages. I think 13 bucks is the nice round number that the market had a very difficult time pushing through for a solid week, week and a half as we really got into August there.
00;11;30;28 – 00;11;34;04
JIM
So that would probably be the next target. Okay.
00;11;34;11 – 00;11;55;21
ANDY
And you know, by the way, so this is a sidebar for you. I had a there is a guy that was on the floor for a while and he he came here from England and he I believe he said that like the word for or the phrase for mass is dog’s dinner. It looks like a dog’s dinner. Oh, he’s got and when you think about a dog’s dinner is pretty messy.
00;11;55;23 – 00;12;00;03
JIM
Yeah. All my dog’s my dog. It’s a a clean dinner, I suppose.
00;12;00;05 – 00;12;01;22
ANDY
Does he really?
00;12;01;25 – 00;12;03;25
JIM
That’s a she, first of all.
00;12;03;28 – 00;12;05;00
ANDY
Sorry about that.
00;12;05;03 – 00;12;11;24
JIM
I mean, come on. And then. Yes, it’s pretty. She’s pretty clean, pretty pointy.
00;12;11;27 – 00;12;16;00
ANDY
Okay, well, you know what? I’m just way off base now, aren’t I?
00;12;16;03 – 00;12;18;14
JIM
Well, I don’t know. Maybe dogs aren’t clean.
00;12;18;15 – 00;12;25;06
ANDY
And I mean, I feel like Dortmund, like cats are pretty clean. I have a cat. Yeah, she keeps herself pretty clean. I mean, like.
00;12;25;09 – 00;12;27;09
JIM
Cats are good at. Cats are better about it.
00;12;27;15 – 00;12;31;07
ANDY
There’s not cat food strung around all over the place every now and again. I mean, if.
00;12;31;09 – 00;12;36;26
JIM
You find some momentum, camels floating around trying to try to stop the kids from eating them, all that good stuff.
00;12;36;29 – 00;12;40;10
ANDY
Okay. Well, I’ve heard it’s pretty tasty. So and.
00;12;40;12 – 00;12;42;11
JIM
I’ve I’ve heard that it is also.
00;12;42;13 – 00;12;45;18
ANDY
And I guess I know what I’m doing for dinner and I.
00;12;45;20 – 00;12;46;21
JIM
Guess we’ve been there.
00;12;46;23 – 00;13;05;05
ANDY
I will say for beans. But something else to be mindful of, too, is what the momentum. So this is I keep forgetting it’s a 12th grade momentum here. This first one, it’s falling short of where it’s at. We’re going to bounce from. Right. And so what this is essentially saying is that like bulls are starting to run out of gas.
00;13;05;07 – 00;13;05;26
JIM
Yep.
00;13;05;28 – 00;13;14;16
ANDY
Right. And so like the last like you’re starting to if you if we were to cross zero, for example, than like the over the last 12 periods, we’re lower than we were or an average of that.
00;13;14;19 – 00;13;14;28
JIM
Yep.
00;13;14;28 – 00;13;32;09
ANDY
So like in this case we saw like back here in early June like bulls obviously took a big control of the market and like these, these secondary indicators tend to trade technically as well. Right. And so you’re failing to get above this this previous, I guess, area of resistance.
00;13;32;11 – 00;13;33;04
JIM
Mm.
00;13;33;06 – 00;13;44;18
ANDY
That to me is another indication that this is kind of looming here. Yeah. So the does I mean I got to think that the next stop would be to go test all this noise. Right. There is a lot of stuff going on right here.
00;13;44;20 – 00;13;47;07
JIM
Dogs, dogs, meal.
00;13;47;10 – 00;14;06;28
ANDY
Dogs, dogs meal. But not Jim’s dog. No, definitely not going to look a dog’s dinner expression. So if I look that up in British English, both dogs breakfast and dogs dinner are used figuratively to denote a confused mess. Yeah, there you go. So I was right about that.
00;14;07;01 – 00;14;08;08
JIM
Breakfast to.
00;14;08;10 – 00;14;18;10
ANDY
Breakfast to. Yeah, breakfast, lunch. And dinner. It’s all available, but I’m getting hungry. All right. Yeah. No, I mean, I think we are kind of in agreeance. I mean, it looks like beans can have a bit of an M here.
00;14;18;13 – 00;14;19;11
JIM
Yeah.
00;14;19;13 – 00;14;25;04
ANDY
And I guess in general, it kind of feels like grains. I could see some weakness with grains.
00;14;25;04 – 00;14;49;12
JIM
Could feel some weakness. And two caveats. We mentioned the delivery period when we were talking about the continuous chart. Today is just days, also the last day of the month of August. So managed money had a last hurrah here today to clean up their monthly balances, if you will. Right. So today was kind of a very much a liquidation mode type day, depending on which market they were in.
00;14;49;12 – 00;15;05;05
JIM
And then tomorrow is first of the month, you head into a three day weekend. So keep in mind there’s probably a little bit of either profit taking and or repositioning ahead of a holiday week or two. So there’s a few the few things going on.
00;15;05;08 – 00;15;20;10
ANDY
A couple of things lingering around here, making it even more of a dog’s dinner, recommending things to turn things very Chicago area. All right. Fair enough. Hey, you know what? I appreciate the color there. Thank you for that. It’s Louis. All right. Last but not least. Last but not least.
00;15;20;16 – 00;15;21;16
JIM
Yeah.
00;15;21;19 – 00;15;22;21
ANDY
I put it October.
00;15;22;27 – 00;15;23;23
JIM
Oh, yeah.
00;15;23;25 – 00;15;28;11
ANDY
Come on. You were here. I feel like he’d have a hammer. I feel like he’d be hitting that hammer with both hands.
00;15;28;16 – 00;15;29;11
JIM
100% nasty.
00;15;29;13 – 00;15;30;20
ANDY
Stop buying.
00;15;30;22 – 00;15;34;27
JIM
Yeah. Oh, yeah. There’s. We would have broken the mouse.
00;15;35;00 – 00;15;38;26
ANDY
Yeah. I mean, hit the mentality. He only has a left click on his mouse.
00;15;38;28 – 00;15;40;07
JIM
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
00;15;40;13 – 00;15;46;15
ANDY
Right click. It’s just. It’s gone. It’s like just put gone. There’s not even a Band-Aid there. It’s just like. It’s just poof, it’s gone.
00;15;46;18 – 00;15;47;23
JIM
You know? It used for it.
00;15;47;25 – 00;16;07;23
ANDY
There’s no use zero. So grab This is October milk. We put October down. This has been kind of a it’s been such a tricky trade, right? Because you’ve had you had instances where it looks like it was trying to make a w you loved this and then bam, failed that. Not even close, but then did it again. And you had another like higher low type, you know, relative to here.
00;16;07;23 – 00;16;28;08
ANDY
And it and this price seemed to be something that it you know, it definitely didn’t like 1770 ish right. The 1 to 3 times to try to trade there. It promptly moved away from that pretty quickly. So the measurement I took was and say, you know, I think you could argue we broke out right around here. This is when it really started to accelerate higher.
00;16;28;10 – 00;16;28;21
JIM
Mm.
00;16;28;27 – 00;16;43;29
ANDY
So it really depends on where you want to take the measurement, but a little bit more conservative would be to take it where it started to accelerate from. You take that and lay it on top of depending on where you want to have it breaking out from. Right. So if you say this here is where it broke out, which was on the 25th, Right.
00;16;44;00 – 00;16;46;07
ANDY
So it cleared all this dog’s dinner.
00;16;46;09 – 00;16;47;05
JIM
Yep.
00;16;47;08 – 00;17;13;25
ANDY
You’d lay that basically on top of that and call it like a flagpole. Mean it takes you over 20 bucks. Yeah, $1. So this October is getting really interesting. So what was current cash today, Jim? It’s 60. So 1840 using step way. If you add in four ish cents for a premium, you’re talking like 1880 ish, 1875. You know, that’s not that we’re not trading at that big of a premium and it still doesn’t start pricing for another couple of weeks.
00;17;13;25 – 00;17;16;21
ANDY
Check out bases loaded with Joe, by the way. Learn more about that.
00;17;16;24 – 00;17;17;18
JIM
Absolutely.
00;17;17;21 – 00;17;42;08
ANDY
So, yeah, I mean, like I think if this market caught a whiff of a bid and cheese and, you know, maybe we’re up one or $0.02 and it just the way it’s been trading like today, for example, no better offer in cash kind of a done we were higher heading into cash decent volume two might say higher I mean October was and then we had a quick step back to like 5 to 10 low or whatever it was.
00;17;42;08 – 00;17;54;29
ANDY
And then just basically throughout the afternoon, early afternoon after cash steadily sort of buying it. And here we are closing into or above that close or even drastically trading. I think we closed right around the high of this move right here.
00;17;55;02 – 00;17;55;21
JIM
Yeah.
00;17;55;23 – 00;18;15;11
ANDY
We’ve left a lot of selling behind anybody that’s an anybody that’s selling it here, you have to go back to like, shoot like early Mac to find somebody that’s making money there. So it’s it feels like you could have. I think what’s coming is a blowout up. I certainly would want to be ready to sell something should we rally October because, you know, the flip side is you’re going to start talking about like a 210 type cheese number.
00;18;15;11 – 00;18;21;01
ANDY
I feel like that’s going to run into some resistance. But this could get this one looks like it could get a little spicy. Jim.
00;18;21;03 – 00;18;29;05
JIM
So is this a for you? Is this a do I continue to add to this long? Are you looking for the top here?
00;18;29;08 – 00;18;41;07
ANDY
That’s what a great question you just asked. What a phenomenal question probably be. Look, I don’t know if I want to be adding to longs. If you had them in, I’d probably make sure that you had orders to sell them.
00;18;41;09 – 00;18;42;28
JIM
Yeah.
00;18;43;00 – 00;19;02;13
ANDY
This is this strikes me as the type of trade where, you know, let’s say, like I said, let’s say you were getting long or you or a producer or looking for spots to sell it. Like, let’s say you’re like 19 and asked easy number. It feels like it are the type of trade we’re going to want to have your order working because you could trade a price and then be away from that price pretty quickly.
00;19;02;15 – 00;19;22;05
ANDY
Right? It feels like you could see something kind of like this where, you know, we pop go to 20 bucks or, you know, 1975 and the cheese market just starts to run out of gas, you know, relative to the rest of the world. We could expensive something like that. And you start to see off or show back up like when we were at like two or three to a four block.
00;19;22;08 – 00;19;44;26
ANDY
And we promptly have a day like this that it gets just gets very difficult to sell something. So yeah, now there’s been some there’s been some interesting trade here too. We’ve seen some trade, some old money calls like the 1984 1970 fives. Again, I feel like a rally here is coming that you probably should be looking at potentially trying to sell something in two or at least people letting go of longs or hedging off longs, buying inputs or something like that.
00;19;44;28 – 00;20;14;02
JIM
It it doesn’t quite have the feel like when we were looking at the note being chart like it doesn’t quite have that feel yet of like gasping for air. It’s not as just straight up, if you will. I mean, this has been a kind of steady climb of entering a new threshold when you got down to what, 1650 down there and you made your way back up, pulled back into 1750 a little bit a, you know, dog’s dinner throughout that little range there.
00;20;14;05 – 00;20;41;05
JIM
You do just kind of ride that 50 day very nicely. And once you got back above it, finally, you’ve essentially have held it since then. So, yeah, it doesn’t feel like it needs to just fall apart the way that those two rallies fell apart on no beans. Yeah, just as a someone who does that steady milk and sometimes Ryan does this on some of our team calls as well.
00;20;41;05 – 00;20;59;20
JIM
But hey, you know, outsider just looking at a chart, what do you think? So it doesn’t feel like it’s just it necessarily needs to fall apart that dramatically. So maybe your targets then are back to 1750 where there is a whole bunch of support there throughout that dog’s buffet, if you will.
00;20;59;22 – 00;21;17;23
ANDY
The dog’s buffet. I feel like you’d be a great restaurant owner. I’m going to throw that out there just like this isn’t what that simmer. Thank you. But yeah, no, I think we’re at you and I are on the same page here with everything, right? I mean, it feels it gets a little popper here. We’ll see how it does it, but it does.
00;21;17;26 – 00;21;44;22
ANDY
It feels like I said, the other piece of it, too, is we’re starting to see some nice volume pick up. Yesterday, we traded 668 contracts on a day when cash literally did nothing. So, yeah, I feel like we’re getting ready to put in a premium right before we start pricing. That’s just what a think. So on that note, I can’t thank you enough for joining and, you know, like helping out with the hosting as well.
00;21;44;25 – 00;22;03;06
ANDY
I’m not used to all the hair too. Like my side of the table. There was there was a I think I forget what year it was maybe page it. No, but like there was a year where he didn’t, like, shave or do anything, like, I don’t know, for a full year. And he kind of like a Costanza thing going.
00;22;03;06 – 00;22;05;16
JIM
On like one of the old friars or something, maybe.
00;22;05;16 – 00;22;09;13
ANDY
Or Yeah, Tums. It was like, but it was like monk robes. A grape.
00;22;09;15 – 00;22;13;09
JIM
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Halloween’s coming up right around the corner.
00;22;13;16 – 00;22;14;20
ANDY
What are you going to be.
00;22;14;22 – 00;22;18;04
JIM
Rolled out now? I might be a monk. All this goatee.
00;22;18;07 – 00;22;20;28
ANDY
You just be goatee. That’s right. You get, like, a hammer. You could be Kody.
00;22;21;00 – 00;22;23;24
JIM
Yeah. Bye Bye. Bye.
00;22;23;27 – 00;22;28;27
ANDY
Just. That’s the only word that comes out of your mouth. I am going, buy.
00;22;28;29 – 00;22;30;18
JIM
NYSNC style. Bye, bye, bye.
